Harris reportedly didn’t stop and led the trooper on a brief chase before pulling over in his neighborhood. He then allegedly got out of his vehicle, and a confrontation took place.

A Delaware State Police trooper fatally shot a driver after attempting to pull over the driver in Milltown and being dragged by his vehicle, police said. A Kentucky State Trooper was shot after during a highway traffic stop Sunday night, and the suspect was killed after a morning manhunt.

A shot was fired and Harris was killed. It’s not clear if police knew Harris was deaf.

WCCB reports that Harris’ family members are also deaf. His brother, Jay Harris, told WCCB that he was unarmed. That hasn’t been confirmed by investigators. But Jay believes his brother was unaware that he was being pulled over. The trooper involved said he fired shots because Harris was advancing and not following commands, according to WCCB. “And he is a deaf individual, and I think that he was just afraid,” said Jay Harris.

“He could not hear their warnings. He could not hear their commands to stop or to stay away from them.” Harris had a four-year-old son. His family says they are now working to raise awareness on what happened so it won’t happen again to deaf drivers in the future.
