Free Program El Paso 10059 Manual

EL PASO, Texas - The Ysleta Independent School District will offer a free Pre-K program to all El Paso families. YISD officials announced Tuesday that the program will be available at 16 schools. Families who typically don't qualify for free Pre-K programs or live outside YISD boundaries will be eligible for the program, officials said. YISD said it wants to emphasize the importance of early childhood education through the free program.

District officials said the program is designed to help develop children's social, emotional, self-help, and cognitive skills while providing hands-on activities and immersing them in a literature rich environment. 'We believe this is going to address what often comes across as an academic achievement gap where students who do not have the benefit of affordable standard spaced Pre-K experience can come to our schools with a vocabulary of no more than 300 to 400 words,' said Superintendent Xavier De La Torre. De La Torre said that it does not require documentation for eligibility purposes, which means children can attend regardless of their income or language. 'Any family that comes forward assuming that there is room at the pre-k program will be admitted,' De La Torre said. The district already offers pre-kindergarten to about 1,000 students through a partnership with Region 19. However, De La Torre said this 'universal program' will allow the district to add 1,000 more seats so more children can attend pre-kindergarten. 'Our hope is that once a student and a family are exposed to the quality education available in the Ysleta Independent School District, that regardless of where they live, in the city of El Paso, they'll decide to remain in the Ysleta Independent School District,' De La Torre said.

Lovette Leyva is a parent who lives in the Socorro Independent School District. She said she next year she wanted to enroll her 3-year-old daughter, Anahi, to pre-kindergarten. 'At a young age like that, I think it's good for them to interact with other children,' Leyva said.

But Leyva said that her family does not meet the requirements to attend pre-kindergarten for free in SISD and she said they can't afford to pay it out of pocket. 'I'm not going to pay an influx of almost 200 dollars a month to take her to a three or four hour program,' Leyva said. Leyva said YISD's free Pre-K program will give her daughter and other working families the opportunity to send their children to pre-kindergarten. She added that she thinks other school districts in El Paso should consider making pre-kindergarten a free program. 'Working families want to eliminate a bill so if we can send our kids to a pre-K that a public school offers, why are you charging?'
