I have had my maxtor 320Gb personal storage external drive for about 6 months now and it's worked fine with both windows xp sp2 and vista. However recently, i atempted to transfer a file and it came up with an write error message.

After that it hasn't been responding with pc. When connected to my pc it says 'usb device not recognised' 'one of the USB devices has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it.' I connected to my laptop (vista ultimate) and it works fine. Looked in the pc's device manager only to find it in 'other devices',and as an unknown device in USB. Searched for driver and there was none.

Tried to call maxtor (now seagate) and number doesn't work 18. Can any one help i have many many important files on this drive.
